ICSIP was held on 7th, 8th,  and 9th December 2006.

The enthusiasm shown by the participants during these three days was beyond our expectation.  This was not only observed but was evidenced through the feedback received.

The conference rightly began with a warm-up session on Research Mindset by Prof P Nagabhushan which largely aimed at exposing the delegates to the importance of research.

It was followed by six pre conference tutorials conducted by resource persons from industry and academia.   All of them were well received by the delegates.  Hence,  the objective of domain specific research exposure was truly met.

Participants

IEEE ICSIP was formally inaugurated on the 8th Dec by none other than Prof B S Sonde,  a fatherly figure in academics and research.  The historical narration by the Chief Guest on the birth of Signal Processing activity from its early 20th Century that evolved as a prominent area and its current significance was really a memorable one.  The Proceeding of the conference was released by an equally eminent academician and a true researcher from IIT Delhi,  Prof. S C Dutta Roy.

In the first keynote delivered by Prof S C Dutta Roy,  who is Professor emeritus,  IIT Delhi,  on Innovations in Lattice Structure for DSP,  highlighted many fundamental aspects of research avenues in the area.

The center point of attraction was the first panel discussion on Research Openings in the conference theme.  Rightly led by  Prof P Naganbhushan it threw open many directions for the delegates to undertake research.

Second conference keynote on Trends in Medical Image Analysis by Dr Ravi Malladi of GE global research,  threw open many need based research issues that are currently of large significance,  impacting the technology.

Twelve oral paper presentation sessions parallely held in 4 tracks gave the delegates an opportunity to participate and deliberate on papers of their choice.  Along with oral,  three poster sessions were also held and the authors were benefited with suggestions from the session chairs.

It was a hectic day for all the resource persons and delegates which was aptly compensated by a banquet dinner hosted at Cotton County Club.

The last day of the conference saw an invigorated audience attending with keen interest all the activities of the day.

It began with the third conference keynote on New Paradigms in Pattern Recognition by Prof Saragur N Srihari,  Buffalo University,  USA.  His authoritative presentation through decades of research in PR,  opened up yet very fundamental and unexplored research directions.

In succession the fourth conference keynote was delivered on Social Media by Dr Srinivasan S H from Yahho Inc,  India. Â  Dr Srinivasan stressed many need based research avenues in web searching through data bases.

Yet another panel discussion rightly chaired by Prof Saragur N Srihari,  went on to give concrete research directions, addressing engineering & community based research,  as well as theoretical and fundamental research.

Though the schedule of the conference had been hectic,  the delegates still showed keen interest in understanding new challenges involved in Embedded Platforms for Computer Vision.  This fifth conference keynote was delivered by an experienced professional from Siemens Bangalore,  Mrs Rita Chattopadhyay.

After the traditional lunch session,  the rest of the oral & poster presentation sessions received similar impact as on the previous day.

The two inspiring icons behind this conference have really given a good starting and ending with an invigorated beginning towards research.  In good contrast to Prof.  P Nagabhushan's warm-up session on the 1st day of conference,  his mentor and our guiding spirit Prof.  K Chidananda Gowda,  former VC,  Kuvempu University aptly delivered the valedictory Keynote address.  It left behind the delegates mesmerized and motivated imprint in the minds of the delegates through his presentation of Philosophical views on Cognition & Recognition.

Other major outcome of this conference is in bringing out a special issue on Vision & Multimedia Processing - VMP in Electronic Journal on Computer Vision and Image Analysis - ELCVIA.  This issue will have improved version of select best few papers of this conference.

Felicitating the accomplished researchers and academicians is a feather in the cap to this befitting IEEE ICSIP conference.

A Technical society 'Signal and Pattern Engineering Society of India - SPESI' will be formed under the torch bearership of Prof B N Chatterji and Prof K Chidanda Gowda.  With the following objectives: 1.  To conduct IEEE ICSIP & ICCR under the banner of SPESI biennial  2.  To provide a facilitating umbrella for the young researchers and 3.  To bring out a international level journal in which first few issues will be invited papers.
